3. Design a Fish Tank
The Principal of your school has asked you to design a fish tank to be placed in the auditorium. The principal has indicated that all the tools for building the fish tank would be given to you, so you don’t have to be concerned about how much they cost. The only things that you need to be concerned with are:
- The cost of the glass for making the fish tank; and
- The cost of the fish to put in the
The principal has asked you to determine your choice for the best design of the fish tank so that it stays within the budget of $4,000.
Starting the Design
The principal has asked you to design a fish tank that meets the following conditions
- The area of the base of the fish tank must be 480 square inches
- The base of the fish tank must be shaped like a rectangle but must not be a square.
- The length of the fish tank is 24 inches
The principal would like the fish tank to be 10 inches deep. You must buy glass sheets to construct the fish tank as seen below.
The fish tank is a rectangular prism that is filled with water.
It has a base but no top.

Phil's Hardware Store, offers rectangular glass sheets that are measured by width and length and sold in three original sizes.

You plan to buy the glass from Phil's Hardware Store to make the fish tank.
Using the information from the design of your fish tank, what is the cost to buy the number of glass sheets needed to build the fish tank?
